I didnt get to see my midwife til i was approx 15 weeks! I felt a bit useless till then coz u just dont know whats going on. Try not to worry yourself, take your folic acid and look after yourself. For the first 12 weeks, i found that they didnt really take me seriously! Maybe i was expecting too much!! G'luck hun Becky and 20 weeks old bump x

Hi there, my midwife wont see anybody till at least 8 weeks, then I had a hour long appointment, which they call booking in. Then I had a scan 1t 12 weeks, then saw midwife at 16 weeks, then am having another scan at 22 weeks (should be 20 but they are busy). Apparantly you are meant to see somebody every four weeks once you are in the system?

I didn't see a midwife until i was 15 weeks pregnant. Just relax and go with the flow. Did the doctor give u a number to book ur dating scan at the hospital? That would be the next step then once you've got your 12 week scan booked i would inform the midwife when you're scan is and she'll prob want to see you either just before or just after! hope everythign turns out ok, good luck!

i thought the first midwife appointment was around 12wks anyways. at first midwife appointment works out your due date & that, doc doesnt really do much unless you have bleeding or something serious.

"I was the same..." Posted by shellyh71 11 October at 14:43
I had a similar experience as you. After trying to get preg for about a year i fell pregnant after about 5 pregnancy tests to be sure!!!! I rang the doctors for an appt only to be told by the receptionist that there is no need to see the doctor and she just booked me in with the midwife 4 weeks later. I was quite pi**ed with this as this is my first child and obviously didnt have a clue about what to expect, dates etc. However i am now 28 weeks and after that first midwife appt i felt better and more reassured that someone gave a sh*t and i wasnt being left with no advice!! I havent got any complaints about the care i have recieved since as all midvives have been great.
Hope all goes well for you xMx

"I had simular thing at my docs" Posted by tweetypie83 11 October at 12:29
My boyfriend and I was trying to get pregnant for nearly a year with a miscarrage inbetween, we have moved since then so our new docs where baffled by what my last doc said they would do when I found out I was pregnant next time. They said they would get me in for a early scan and do extra checks for me to keep my mind at rest but my new docs basically said no chance. I was confused and my doc said that the midwife wouldnt see me til when I thought I'd have been 12wks. Like you my periods where irregular so was bit difficult working out when I was do, just count 40wks from your last period but remember that you may not be as far gone as that so add on a extra wk at least to be o the safe side.
I pestured my doc and the receptionist to get my midwife appoint ment earlier because your 12wk scan date may take upto 2/3wks to come through so make them give you an appointment sooner to insure you get your scan aroung 13-14wks.
Hope this helps

"Should also mention....." Posted by poshbosh 11 October at 12:04
that if you tell the doctor that you have had a positivxe pregnancy test then they will not test you themselves. This is because false positives are supposedly non-existant whereas false negatives are more likely. So if you have a positive pregnancy test then you can be pretty certain that you are pregnant.
They will not feel your tummy or anything at this stage - my midwife didn't either - as your baby is so tiny that they would not feel anything. My tummy was not felt by hand until i went for my 20 week appointment to my doctor.
So although frustrating I'm afraid that your case in not uncommon - until you have your scan there is not much they do anyway. Even my first midwife appointment at my hospital she only took my family history. Just make sure you keep taking your folic acid and i personally also recommend that you take Omega 3,6 +9 if you can afford to buy it - tescos do this as well as most health shops - as this has been proven to be benefitial to the babys brain development.
Sorry for rattling on but i hope it all helps best of luck on your pregnancy!!
All the best Holly

To be honest even when the doctor did give me an estimated due date it was wrong - the first scan is the best way to get this information. If you know the date of your last period then add on 280 days. That is what doctors use as your due date generally.
Hope this helps

"Don't worry" Posted by ajr1 11 October at 11:18
at the begging they are not to worried as you have a way to go, you will get a scan arond 12 -16 weeks this will be the best way they can judge how far gone you are, the doctors wont do much more than a test its the midwifes who know what there doing! folic acid is important at the begining so he was right in doing that, you will find at the mo that if feels like your not see many people about it but theres not alot they can do.
hope it works out well for you.

I had the same experience...but the dr didn't even feel my stomach! I had my M/W appointment at 10 weeks, so you may want to ask if you can get a earlier one.
Once you see the M/W she/he will do your bloods and urine test so at least that is something.
Hope everything goes well for you

"Hi" Posted by brm2007 11 October at 01:23
I didn't have my first midwife appointment until I was 12 weeks. I had to get a scan to find out my due date as I was also irregular and couldn't even remember my last period (scan confirmed when I was around 9 weeks - whichj is what we guessed). Still from the week I found out I was pregnant I had to see my gp every 4 weeks, 2nd trimester every 2 weeks, and third every one (or along those lines). I would have thought your doctor would refer you to get a scan at 12 weeks - maybe you should either see a different one, or go back and say you WANT a scan to confirm dates etc...
Hope this helps!!!

"Hi" Posted by jules3010 11 October at 13:00
I don't know if I just have an exceptionally good doctor but my experience has been extremely different. I went to my docs last week after having 2 positive home tests, I had also been suffering from period type cramping (but not as strong and comes and goes) on and off for two weeks. I have a slightly over active thyroid which effects my periods so they are very eractic. so I had no idea of dates but could of been upto 8 weeks maximum. My doc called the local hospital while I was in his office, I had an appointment set for the same day with the early pregnancy clinic, they took bloods and sent me for a scan, the scan looked like I was only just 4 weeks (my sac which was only visible by a vaginal scan was 4mm) I went back to hospital 2 days later to give more bloods to make sure my HCG levels were rising correctly (which they are ) the hospital called me on monday to give me my results and booked me in for another scan which I had yesterday. This time my sac (which is now 8.3mm) was visible by normal ultrasound. I have now been given a third scan date of the 24th of this month, so I will be 7 weeks by then.
The sister at the early pregnancy unit has confirmed everything is looking great but they are going to let me come back in at 7 weeks to hopefully see its much bigger and has a heartbeat, before handing me over to a normal midwife
What I cannot understand is why people's doctors take such a different view on this. My doctor has been brilliant, he has also set up an appointment with the midwife for me as well as an obstetrician (although this is purely because of my thyroid problems).
So I think if your not happy push for an appointment or change doctors. I know in most cases there is no need to see a anyone until your 12 weeks, but if your like me and you don't know if your 3 weeks or 8 weeks and are worried for whatever reason, its best to get it checked out then worry about it for weeks
let us know how you get on
xx

"Hi" Posted by lisad11 11 October at 15:01
Hi there to all
I'm now 13+5 weeks and am yet to even see a midwife. my doc was great went i she felt my tummy as i was already 9+2 weeks when i found out and refered me to the hosp. she said if i hadn't heard from them in 4 weeks i needed to go and see her. when after 4 weeks i went back she was furious at them. i had had a lot of bleeding and a blood clot was founf behind the placenta which was susposed to be checked on at 12 weeks.
she wrote another letter which was faxed as urgent and i have been trying to get through but with no luck. my sister in law (ish) saw midwife at 8 weeks, had 12 weeks scan at 12 weeks and has a date for her 20 week scan. i think it all depends on your local authority.
