"Bowel problems" Posted by linicas 28 April at 16:02
Bowel problems are very common during pregnancy. I am 18 weeks pregnant with my fourth child. I had many bowel movements in the first few months some which were very loose. I know have the opposite problem which is constipation. I think the constipation is worse due to the stomach discomfort that it causes.

"Laxative use" Posted by chez10 22 April at 11:10
I found out 2 weeks ago that I am pregnant and this is my first. I am only about 4 weeks gone but am already suffering with severe constipation. I mentioned it to my doctor last week but she just reassured me that it is normal. I don't feel very normal though. I was quite concerned when I hadn't been properly for over a week and panicked that it would be toxic for the baby. So I took some Califig and that worked but now I am wishing I hadn't because I am panicking that I have done more harm than good. Has anyone else ever taken a laxative? Especially during the first trimester? And did it cause any problems with the baby?

I have many problems with constipation and have wanted to take a laxative but, was told that I should not. It was suggested to me to eat plenty of fruit such as blueberries and watermelon. It was also reccomended that I cut back on my carbs and meat.
There is no use to concern yourself with something you have already done. I would suggest eliminating the items I suggested and added plenty of blueberries, watermelon and raisins to your diet. Do not forget plenty of water.
I have also found if I keep my daily exercise regimen that my bowel movements are more regular.
Good Luck!

"Re laxative use" Posted by magroo 22 April at 14:15
Hi, I've had a problem with severe constipation throughout my pregnancy, to the extent that I thought I was going into early labor two weeks ago with the pains in my stomach. I am now 37 weeks pregnant and my doctor prescribed lactulose solution for me at around 8 weeks pregnant. I have been taking this solution when I need to throughout my pregnancy. Yes, constipation it is a common complaint and nothing to worry about when you are pregnant, however it does not make it any less unpleasant and you don't have to put up with it. Go back to your doctor and ask her to prescribe lactulose solution for you which gives you a natural relief in a day or two. Otherwise you can buy this over the counter in any pharmacies but remember to ask the pharmacists advice. I am sure you would not have done any real harm by taking 1 dose of calfig, but if you are concerned advise your doctor who can clarify this for you. Good luck!!!

Hi,
Thanks for that reassuring advice. At least I can relax a little now which hopefully will help alleviate the problem a bit. I will go to my doctor and ask her about lactulose - thanks.
Sorry to hear you have struggled with it as well.
Good luck to you too!

"This might change" Posted by sarahlharrison 8 March at 20:35
I didn't notice any change but its good for you that it is this way as you can expect it to change the other way and for things to slow down. I think constipation is more of a problem in pregancy than what you are expeiencing.
