| Thread started by: | "Paying direct debits when on maternity pay!" Posted by natty398 9 January at 17:16
Im not sure if any1 can help but its worth a go!
Like 1 of my msg's i posted earlier ive started to do some forward planning & ive suddenly realised that with the brilliant amount of maternity pay that you get when on maternity leave (NOT!), i will have pretty much not alot of money left once my direct debits have been paid off! I have my mobile contract which is ok, but also a loan of nearly £300 that i pay back a month!
Has any 1 else got this problem & come up with a solution? Or does any1 know of any Banks / Loan companies that do 6 or 12 month deffered payment breaks as i will be going back to work after 7 months (on a part time rate - but i will be able to start paying the loan off again then). My bank, Natwest doesnt do this so if i can find a bank that does i will move my loan.
My boyfriend works (but he isnt on a huge amount unless he works all the extra hours under the sun) & i dont want to have to rely on him to pay for absolutly everything - Rent, bills, food, petrol etc etc!
Natty & 25 week pink bump x x x

As soon as we found out I was pregnant, I put £200 aside every month to top up the maternity allowance when on maternity leave. It means I've managed to put aside £1800 that I will devide between my 7 months maternity leave (or less if we find out we can't afford for me to take as much time off as this). With this plus maternity allowance I'll be able to contribute to half the mortgage, the usual direct debits, my pension and hopefully some bills here and there. So far it's ok, but i've been on maternity leave only for 4 weeks now and I still have some money left from last month's salary. We'll see in February how things are going. So try to put aside as much as you can ; taking a leave from your payments will only delay the problem so if you can avoid it, try to. good luck Florence

I know there are some companies that do think I think my bank Lloyds offer a 3 month deferred payment on a loan. Thing is though if you go down this route they whack they interest rates up and you end up paying a stupid amount back.
One thing though can you not get a credit card with a 0% interest rate on transferred balances? Some of them will allow you to transfer a loan over to the as well as another credit card.
Failing that a sneaky way to get around is to get 2 credit cards, withdraw on 1 of them in cash the amount of money you need to pay of your loan (and obviously make the payments back as soon as you get the cash) might mean a daily trip to the cash machine for a while but hey ho. Then transfer the balance of that credit card to the 0% one. Means for the months without being at work you can just make the minimum repayment and not get stung for it
worth a thought
