"Our baby is here ....my birth story!"

Hi Guys

Well, finally I had our gorgeous baby...13 days late and it's a ......... girl! Eden Josie made her way into the world on Thursday 17th January at 10.58pm. It was also her grandad's 60th birthday...what a present! She weighed 7lb 6oz and is absolutely perfect, I had no idea it was possible to love one human being so much.

So, how did it go..... I had my 3rd sweep on the Wednesday morning which gave me low level and very manageable contractions almost straight away. I coped well with these all day and got on with things as normal finally falling asellep at 11pm that night. By 1am it was starting to hurt but was okay until about 8am when I transferred into the local midwife led birthing unit. They told me I was 1-2cm dialated and to go home which I did and returned again at midday - still 1-2 cm dialated! I had pethadine as the contractions were quite intense but to be honest it did very little for me. By 4pm I was 5cm and my waters were broken to speed things up. I used a birthing ball, a birth pool and gas and air, the pethadine had worn off long since. Everything was very calm and relaxed.

At 9am I was 9-10cm but with no urge to push it was found Eden's head was still high and she was in distress and had poo'ed inside me. They lost her heart rate for a time but found it again some minutes later. I also was very unwell and the decision was taken to emergency transfer us to the nearest hospital.

To be honest I remember very little about things but the ambulance ride did the trick and got Eden's head down. By the time at arrived at hospital I was able to push her out without help.

I had to go to theatre to have my placenta manually delivered as it wouldn't separate and to be stitched.

I read this back and the emergency dash sounds quite traumatic, which at the time it was...but actually now I look back the majority of my labour was calm & controlled and I cannot fault any of the care I received. The emergency bit was in both our interests and I have a beautiful little girl as a result, I feel so lucky.

We transferred back to the midwife led unit and spent 5 days there being waited on and supported with everything but the most wonderful team of midwives before coming home today. Her Dad and I are amazed at how happy and complete she has made our lives - how sobby are we?!

All I can say is whilst pregnancy and birth are not easy, the end result is so overwhelmingly precious I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Good luck ladies.

Donna and Eden (5 days old)
