| Thread started by: | "Council housing are crap!!" Posted by natty398 5 February at 16:34
Im currently 29 weeks pregnant, got 11 weeks to go & still living at my parents with my boyfriend.
I applied for council housing last October under a joint application with my partner. The reason we did this is coz obviously i'll be going on maternity leave & will be getting paid pretty much nothing compared to what im use to, and my boyfriend was in the Army until last Sep & in Oct got a new job on a 6 month temporary contract. We will find out the end of Mar this year if they will be taking him on permanently. So for obvious reasons we cant go looking into private renting because we wont know what our money situation is going to be when im off work.
I rang the council today to chase my application for the 2nd time to be told we probably wont get anything coz we are quite far down on the list - why couldnt they tell me this sooner i dont know. The lady i spoke to has asked me to go in and speak to her about other options - this has been arranged for the soonist time she is available - 21st Feb. By this time i will only have 9 weeks left til im due!!!!! She also said we should be looking into private renting if we are desperate even though we wont be able to afford it!!!
This really p*ss*s me off when a yr ago, a mate of mine applied to the same council when she found out she was pregnant, doesnt come from my area (she comes from wolverhampton, i come from Gloucestershire), got less points than i have but got the keys to a 2 bedroomed house within 8 weeks!!!!

Hi hun,
can totally sympathise, council housing is a joke these days and those that really need it always seem to get overlooked. We were on the council list for years (still ttc so even further down the list than you) but ended up getting a place with a housing association. Rent is about the same as council so nowhere near as bad as private renting and they're pretty good about repairs and stuff as well. Had to declare ourselves homeless to get it (had big bust up with family we were living with so had to move out sharpish) but they got us somewhere within a few weeks. Gotta be worth a try for you, it's not as though you don't really need somewhere so don't be afraid to make your situation sound worse than it is, social housing should be there for people exactly like us but everyone else seems to take priority so sometimes you have to lay it on thick or even bend the truth to get what you're entitled to. Sad but true, good luck hun.
Love, Clare xxx

8 years ago i found myself in pretty much the same situation as you and found the council pretty useless ,i was not earning much money and my bf was only getting 140 a week i was living at my nans and he was still at home with his mum my nan even wrote a letter too the council saying i wouldnt be able to live with her once my baby was born all they could offer me was a hostel where i wouldnt be able to live with my partner and that was horrid ,so we saved as much as we could while i was pregnant i didnt even have any maternity clothes and got by wearing t shirts and my bfs trousers and a month before the baby was born still no word from the council we started renting privately it cost a bomb and i had to work when my baby was only 4 weeks old my bf got qualified as a plumber/gas fitter we worked hard for three years and finally we were earning well enough to get a mortgage it took all we had to pay it every month but we did it now hes earning good money not mega bucks but enough for me to give up work when our second child will be born in sept ,in the end im glad we didnt get a council house cause we have our own and im sure that if we were housed by the council we would never of had the drive to do it xx i know its not possible for everyone to do what we have but just wanted to give you some hope x i hope it does work out for you either way cause i know what its like when youre not even sure where you will be living
