Dont' worry about the position of the baby, the doctors are able to tell without needing a scan, they can feel the head/feet/shoulders of the baby when you'll have gone into labour and they'll start checking you. But it might help knowing it beforehand, as you might want to already plan the date of a caesarian, if the baby is in a difficult position late in your pregnancy.
Still, I believe the 3rd scan is very important: they can check the quantity of amniotic liquid and the growth of the baby, and therefore suggest more rest, or decide for an earlier birth. By the way, the 3rd scan is a routine, NHS free visit here in Italy. If you feel more relaxed having it, I'd go to a private clinic and pay for it. But don't worry too much, I'm sure everything will go perfectly well anuway!
I have my 2nd scan on Tuesday, and I'm very excited about it!!

I think that you can ask for one if you really feel there are things that need checking, but in general we only have two in this country. See what your doctor or midwife thinks. Are you worried about anything in particular?

because i find strange to not have one another scan between the 20th and the 40th weeks, seems like an eternity and i think, as long i am concerned, that a 3rd scan could be justify during the last weeks just to check the size and development of the baby. I know that, carying the baby, i can feel if something goes wrong but you never know. Are you pregnant too? How is it going?

...but I've been though it all with friends. not quite the right time for me yet! I've got a question for you though, I've read some of your comments here about the differences in care for preg women in the UK and France and it's relaly interesting. Everyone knows the NHS is getting worse, but do you have to pay in France? And how do women afford to have all the extra tests? Good luck, hope you're feeling well today

and in France if you are on benefits the health service is free but if u have an income you get 70% paid for by the state & you have to insure yourself 4 the rest. So i think it's quite a good system because either way you are protected but the problem is people abuse that system by having treatment they don't need & lots of medication when everything is fine. I mean i'velived here 6 years, have 2 children & everytime i go to the doctor i alwys come back empty handed cause it's only a minor thing in france every visit to your GP u come back with a bag full of medicine: result the french health service in so much in debt!!!! So the grass is always greener.....

with your doctor or GP ? do you always fell that you have received the good advice your children need ? it never happens that you feel uncertain about what he said and miss France to have a pediatrician to look after your baby as he deserves to be looked after ? When your children are ill, like fiever, soar throat, can you see the GP immediately, or during the same day ? I am curious about that cause i dont know how it will be and how i will react when i will have my baby.
You are right about the grass, but in my opinion, i find it very green in France, a nice green, despite the misuse of the system.

Hello, Im Italian and live in Cambridge. I also have a baby (girl) and I am really concerned about my babys health. It really seems they don't have the same private care here. Sincerely I don't like the idea of not having a professional to refer to any time of the day and the night in case my baby is not well. But I am doing a search on the internet to find a private pediatrician if I can..

where I live you only get one scan at around 14 - 15 weeks and you are left for almost 6 MONTHS wondering if all else is well! I think 3 scans throughout 40 weeks is not alot to ask even if it is only to reassure the mum that all is well.

Iam 21 weeks pregnant and i totally agree with you! I mean 2 scan is already poor but 1 scan at 15 weeks! What about knowing the sexe of the baby? No chance then, now you said it i know some friends of mine(dont livr in london) who only got the one scan! Well let's not complain with 2 then! Nat
