Pregnancy notes

Hello me dears,

I have just had my antenatal appt, and in it my dr wrote in the relation to brim/engagement bit the little one is 3/5 palpable. what dos that mean, he told me that she is still very high up and nowhere near engaged.

I only ask as i am due to have a sweep next week, and im kinda fixated on the fact that she is not yet engaged, and if she remains that high up, then the sweep next week will be pointless! And i will have all that discomfort for no reason, cos if she is not engaged then labour will not start as there will not be the right amount of pressure from her head to start it off.

Sorry if i sound like im in a tizzy over this but i kinda am!

Hope someone can help me as i phoned my consultant to ask her and she basically said that we will play it by ear! thats bloody easy for her to say!

Take care

Slightly stressed Karen (37+2)

Hey

First of all, don't worry! If your baby is 3/5 palpable then it means she is 2/5 engaged so she is heading in the right direction! My first baby didn't fully engage until I was in labour, he was only ever 2/5 engaged, so it's also untrue that you won't go into labour if baby is not down far enough. I went into a spontaneous labour while he was still sitting on the brim so at the end of the day, your baby will come when she is ready.

A sweep will only work if your cervix is already softening and getting ready for labour, irrelevant of how far down your baby is, and it may be that they won't even attempt it. Is there any reason for giving you a sweep at 38 weeks? Not sure how it works in different areas but round here they won't offer you one until your due date, unless they have good reason to get you started early or you have a history from previous pregnancies. That's basically because of the fact that they won't put you through the discomfort for nothing when it's unlikely to work, and the earlier they do it the less successful it's likely to be.

I really wouldn't worry about it, take things as they come and your baby will come when she is ready! As long as she is in the right position and heading south then everything looks good, even if she isn't fully engaged yet - there's still time!

Good luck! Lisa n bump 15+3 x

Sweep

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the reply, sorry i did not get on sooner, hubby is poorly with gastroenteritus (think thats how you spell it)

They are sweeping me at 38wks as i have gestational diabeties, and they are worried that the placenta might fail, or something like that!

I am rather skeptical that my cervix will be low and soft enough for them to do it, so to be on the safe side, i am taking a bag in with me, as you never know, they could decide to do the pessery treatment instead!

Heres hoping!

Thanks for all the replies

Hey

Hi Karen,

My midwife said that if you was 1/5 engaged you would basically be able to see the head crowning, i would say that 3/5 is going the right way! I'm only 4/5!!

Take care!

Soooo...

If im 3/5 palpable does that mean although she is sitting there, he can still move her head?

Sorry if i sound thick but he told me she was still pretty high up?!?

Confused now

Hey

I'm also 4/5th palpable, or at least was last Friday, so it seems your girls head if further into your pelvis than either mine or Donnas, and we're just a little bit further on than you...so sounds to me like your babys head is engaging, my mw wrote 4/5ths in my notes and said 'ahh well it's getting there!'

so, it sounds positive regardless of what your dr said.

best of luck

Rachael (38+5)
