"Had 12 wk scan - omg am so worried" Posted by shotofjd 6 May at 20:42
Hey everyone
Well I had my 12 scan today and we saw our lazy lump sleeping away. All seems ok,but ....
Unfortunately baby's nuchal translucency showed up at 3.5mm and the Sonographer has put the fear of God into us talking about high risk of Downs Syndrome and possible heart defects. We're just waiting for the b.test to come back next week before they decide what to do. I might have to go to St.Barts for a heart scan on baby
Scouting the net it seems this figure is actually quite low but I'm still scared. I'm 34 this year and I know the risk gets higher. Has anyone else had this as a problem before or know of anyone? I know 3 people who were fine and interestingly they were all boys!
One good thing though, at least there's only one baby! lol
As Im 34 also, we had the blood tests done for Downs just purley cause of my age, they came back 1:1500 so that kindof put my mind at ease a bit. They dont do the nucal scan here (N.Ireland), we just get the bloods and they are sent away to England to get tested! Wait to you get all your results back Sharon and then make an appointment with your consultant...fingers crossed they come back with the all clear for babs! Try not to worry...I know easier said than done...I was stressed out waiting on mine to come back.
Nuchal scan not available on the NHS in my area so I paid for a private one. The thing that they kept ramming home to us was that the nuchal test depends on the scan AND the blood test. One without the other isn't conclusive at all.
So, I guess what I am trying to say is wait until the blood test results are back and see what the combined result is.
We had to wait a day for blood results and that drove me bonkers so I can imagine how you feel having to wait a week. Try to hang in there.
Before deciding on whether to have the nuchal I had a good mooch on the scans forum on baby centre website. Hopefully this link will get you there
I'm sorry I can't be of much help on this one, dp brother has downs but I'm not in a position to talk to his mum about that stuff unfortunately. I'm sure all will be well, let us know how you get on.
