Hi new mums and mums-to-be's

Just a quick question, I have been breastfeeding Ellie since she was born and although at the begining it was very sore and uncomfortable at times I continued. She seems to be getting plent and is gaining weight nicely and has started to sleep through the night from 10.30-5/5.30am so cant be bad!!

My question is does anyone else vreastfeeding have a nipple that still gets sore, its the same one since she was born and sometimes it is fine but most of the time it is sore!!! Not only that it then sends shooting pains through my boob to the point it is uncomfortable to wear a bra or lay on it or it just hurts laying in bed-to be fair when it hurts it hurts all the time and it is stopping me sleeping!!!!

Is this normal or is there anything I can try?

Zoe and Ellie (5wks and 4days)

xx

Hey,

I would also like to find out what this is.....Lottie is only 3 weeks but i have one boob which is always sore and i too get the shooting pains when she latches on, they last for the first few seconds but im scared to latch her on as i know its going to hurt....
At the moment i am expressing on the sore breast in between feeds to give it a little chance to recover (that doesnt hurt for some reason)and using that camomile stuff in the yellow packaging...cant rememember name begins with K and upstairs so too lazy to fetch!)But making sure i clean it off before next feed. It helps a little.
I will ask my midwife tomorrow who is coming over to do the 'second' heal prick test as first didnt work...great!

Take care,

Lou & Lottie (3 weeks tomorrow)

There is a good section on this site on breast feeding, I was reading it yesterday. It says about the blocked ducts and putting a warm compress on your breast, using massage etc. Have a read, it was really interesting.

Hope its better soon! tc Sharon 26+1wk pink bump x

I think thrush can cause the shooting pains but not sure. One other sigh is if your little girl has white areas in her mouth, if it is thrush you will need to see your GP because you'll both need treating for it. Or you might have a blocked duct...try having a nice bath and massage your boob towards your nipple to see if that helps.

Sometimes I find that if I have a reduction in my milk for some reason, Kieran's strong little suck can make me feel quite sore.

Only other thing I can maybe think of is that she isn't quite latched on properly and the friction is worse because of that? I have one flat nipple and that tends to get sore more than my normal nipple because of the way he is latched on.

Try asking your health visitor. It may be something that they can advise you on.

Also, congrats on breastfeeding - it's not as easy as you think it's going to be but well worth it. We're still going and Kieran is 6 1/2 months now!

Hope this helps
