"Vitamin k after birth"

Hello all mommys and mom-to-bes

I have been advised to draw up a birth plan and 1 question I was asked was, 'do I want my newborn to be given vitamin K straight after the labour.
Would anyone do this if they wer advised by their MW?

Thank You
Siobhan + bump (28 weeks)

Kieran had it orally as I couldn't bear anyone sticking needles in him!

He had one dose at about a day old and the hospital gave us 2 little glass vials that we were to give him when he was 14 and 28 days old. It's dead easy to do.

Take care

I thought that this would be ok to give the baby when I read the sheet that the MW gave me....then I was thinking can they give it orally rather than an injection to a little baby...I must look into this more. Good question Siobhan!

Hey ladies, your midwife should explain to you fully about vitamin K in the next couple of weeks before birth. If you read up on it, it is pretty important that they get it, can help prevent some pretty nasty stuff. It can be given by injection shortly after birth and then you can forget about it, or you can give it to them by mouth, but they have to have several doses of it over a few days/weeks. My son had it via injection so I didnt have to worry about going back for repeat doses, and I will do the same this time. At least then it is over with and I dont have to worry about it again.

Hope this helps
