"Epidural lead to assisted delivery?"
Posted by shivonn 25 July  at  16:12

Hello ladies

I am currently assessing my pain relief options and hav been advised that most woman given epidurals end up requiring assisted deliveries as they are to breathless/tired etc to carry on pushing.
I would really appreciate it if anyone given an epidural in labour can confirm this?
I do not like the idea of using ventouse or forceps to force my baby out but would consider an epidural if the pain went ovr my thresh hold.

Siobhan + bump (28 weeks) xx

Hi Shivonn,

I was induced with my son and my labour lasted for a good long while (36 hours!). I think it was this that exhausted me and not the epidural. In the end he came out by himself although I did need a few stitches afterwards because I tore a little. I think this is that because of the epidural I'd no idea when to push and I'm not convinced that my mw was giving me enough advice at that point (kept talking about how she was going on holiday in few hours' time!). Anyway, don't think I'd have managed without the epidural. Doc did tell me at one point when I'd asked for epidural to be topped up for 2nd time that he was reluctant to do so because it would increase need for intervention so I took his advice and grinned/grunted and bore it for the last hour or so. Best of luck.

not sure what an epidural has to do with being tired/breathless??!!

i had an epidural with my twins-i had to incase i needed to be rushed for a section in case the second baby went into distress waiting for the first one to pop out!lol also second baby had to be turned as he was transverse.

anyways...yes i did get up having forceps-not sure why as i wasnt told they had used them!!!-not a happy bunny when i found out!

i was pushing and moaning(ha ha) for 40 mins and they interviened. have no idea if it was because i had twins or not.

my sis in law had a epidural with her first and had no probs at all.

things to bear in mind are-
*you will be literally straped to the bed and you need to be monitered,
*you have a cathatar(sp) as you cant tell when you need a wee,
*it takes a while fo the feeling to come back
*you literally are numb from waist down to knees...

its sound quite horrible but if you are going to be in labour for 12 hours as i was its a god send! numbed everything off until i started to push-then the pain kicked in and i could feel everything.

i think you need more facts and figures if people are saying 'at lot'or 'most' you need to know how many people out of say 100 that have epidurals end up needing assistance?

hope that helps

"Assisted delivery"

I agree with Rach. Each labour is so different. My NCT teacher banged on and on about pain relief leaing to intervention, but that is not necessarily the case, and quite often are just scare tactics. I imagine you would be more tired/ breathless if you had no pain relief at all which could also lead to intervention/ assisted delivery. You have to do what's right for you on the day, and believe me that may be soooo different from the way you see it now!

Take care,

Sorry, yes!
I'd an epidural after a good 24 hours of labor due to tiredness! I'd an episotomy, forceps and ventouse delivery and I do believe it was due to the epidural!
If i'm lucky to have another baby, I won't have the epidural because i'm still recovering 3 months later!
Which is worse . . . . . hours of pain or weeks of recuperation??
