"Membrane sweep - 1cm dilated - how long??"

Hi everyone,

Feelling quite encouraged after sweep. The midwife said things had started to happen as i was 1cm dilated. She performed a good sweep. My notes say partially effaced as 1cm dilated.grin Does this mean the start do you think? My induction has been booked for the sunday. Do you think i might have ithe baby before then. Im not sure if being 1cm dilated means im starting or how long it takes etc. Does anyone else know??

hi catherine,
you might have had your baby now but just wanted to say,
if its your first baby then its likley that because your 1cm dilated things are happening!
with 2nd and subsequent babies you can always be at least 1cm dilated all the way through your pregnancy,
with my last baby i was 2 weeks late and had a sweep done in the morning,
10pm that night i had a show, 12 midnight contratcions started and i had my baby girl at 5.40am!
good luck!

Everyone must be different. I had my first baby in April, first pains I felt were at 5:00am and was getting them every 5 mins., rang hospital and was told to go in, got there about 8:30am and was only 1 cm dilated so was sent home. Pains continued every 5 mins. and getting worse, rang hospital again at 1:00 and the told me to come in again. Got there at about 2:30 and was 4 cms dilated - had baby at 10:18pm.

Good luck!

Hi,

I had my first little one back in February this year and I was 1cm when I had a membrane sweep at 1pm on Thursday, by 3pm I had my first contraction and stayed in slow labour, going into hospital early Sunday morning and giving birth Sunday teatime!
Everyone is different but the sweep certainly got the ball rolling for me allbeit slowly!!!
All the best!
