poop my pants when I was in labour but it was the baby's head on tail bone and bowel! It just feels like you're about to do the biggest poop ever, even though you're probably not! I was lucky in that we had a birthing room with a pool (which I couldn't use as my waters broke 36hrs before!) and had its own bathroom. So I went off to the loo every so often thinking I was going to go. I even kept my knicks on til the last minute! The midwife had to remind me that I couldn't have the baby still wearing them - LOL!!
Also when my waters broke, I was lying in bed and had a maternity pad on as I'd had a show an hour before. It just soaked the pad, there wasn't too much water. An odd feeling, can't describe it really. Not like wetting yourself more like when you have your period and you get a rush when you get out of bed (sorry TMI!) Also your waters will smell just like straw, its weird! I'd recommend getting some maternity sheets from Boots and Mothercare to use under your bottom sheet on the bed. That's what I did from around 34wks just in case mine popped one night! I read somewhere that amniotic fluid can ruin your mattress - yuck!!
RE: pain relief, Pethidine didn't touch the sides for me. Gas and air was great at first but at the end it was more of a distraction than anything else. I didn't fancy using a TENS machine. I was offered an epidural but I wanted to feel in control and I knew as all the pain was in my lower back, I wanted to stand as much as possible. Ideally I wanted a water birth but couldn't have one due to my circumstances. I'd research all pain relief and see how you feel at the time. I'd also say that your birth plan might go straight out of the window too, but write one and keep an open mind.
How far along are you?

i was paranoid about pooing andwhe i was in labour i told the midwife, she just laughed and said ifthat was all i had to worry about i would be just fine!!then i worried about what i should be worrying about and completely forgot about the poo. im told i never but who know you really cant tell and REALLY wont care!!
as for waters gushing, my oh loves teling this story, my waters popped (it felt like a pop when they went)at 2.25am and 'gushed out' (like a massive ... when you are bursting so i rushed (waddled) to he toilet and sat there fr 10 mins panicing that i was going to have a baby whilst oh asked what he could doi thought they had stopped r at least slowd down so i stoo up and the motion of standing made mre gush out all over the bathroom floor whilst oh was ... himslef laughing. he loves telling that story as i just stood ther in complete shock, i didnt realise just how much water i was carrying.
and do you know what they asked me at the hospital, are you sure it was your waters! i just looked at them in that way and they knew!1

EVERY first time mum worries about this and believe me midwives have seen it all and you can;t care less when your giving birth anyway and you can;t feel if your doing it because everything kind of goes numb very hard feeling to describe, with reguards to pain relief study up on whats available and have what you think you need put it all down let your midwife know * they will help with the birth plan at around 34-37 weeks* and then when you actually go into labour you may find you want more or less, i did my first 2 with just gas and air and my 3rd with nothing was too quick

well, i was very worried about the whole poo thing. when i went to my antenatal class the midwife said 'all women poo in labour and those who say they didn't are either lying, or they didn't know'. well that was it, i was stressed RIGHT out then.
i can safely say however, that once i got into the swing of labour, i couldnt have cared less whether it happened or not. that said, once oliver was born, my first question was whether or not the poo thing had happened and i insisted on looking to make sure because i thought that they were lying when they said no!!
as for waters - mine went at 4.15 am with a great big 'gush' but continued to leak out a little bit with every contraction for the rest of my labour.
pain relief - well. i am a wimp. a grade A wimp. i cry every year when i have my flu jab im that pathetic! i had a couple of goes at the gas and air, but thought it was absolutely rubbish and didnt have anything else. it really isnt as bad as you think that it is going to be. i would go so far as to say i actually enjoyed giving birth.
dont stress, you wont care what is happening when the time arrives, trust me!!
love kelly, oliver nearly 7 months and 9+3 bean xxx
