Wow
i don't usually like unusual names, but i must say i LOVE these two names.
I think their both very pretty for a little girl. I would probably choose Philippine. I don't think they are a problem to pronounce in English, I'm English [Australian] and i can pronounce them fine.

Typical french names???????????
well i am french and i don't know anyone called like that. I like Sixtine even though it inevitably reminds me of the chapel. But i don't find that disturbing. It's cute. Philippine, no way. Philippa is a nice name and I like the nickname Pippa.

Philippine
I can't tell you what is a problem or not in England (I'm french) but I know a french family who live in England and the daughter's name is Philippine.
I love this name ! Although I don't know how it sounds in english, I love Philomène and Sixtine as well

How tough!
Thanks for your replies, but I really hesitate now!
At first I was slightly more up for Philippine. Last week (and still today) it has been Sixtine, and now I hesitate again with Philomène!!
As for Sixtine (Sistine in English), I don't mind the reference to the chapel as this is such a beautiful place and piece of art! Lots of names refer to places or objects... The issue is more on the pronounciation and the number 'sixteen'...
Philippine, Philomène, I love both names and they would probably be easier than Sixtine in an international context.
thanks again.
any more thoguhts??

Hello
I'm french, and i see your post and i'd think it's not really beautiful for a girl ; because for me, the name sixtine let's me thinking to a chapel... sorry i'd prefer Philomène it's more pretty and... royalty's name

Philomène
If you have to choose between the two, I'd go for Philippine; however, I know a French family who lives here in the US and their daughter is called Philomène. It's gorgeous, and people don't have any trouble pronouncing it.

How old is she?
Do you know the names of her brothers/sisters? Where do you live in the US? Lots of questions, sorry... thanks a lot for your reply, very useful!

Same problem !
The English would definately think of the number 16. Philippine is very sweet and for the country we say "The Philippines". I prefer Philippine to Philomène. I know how you feel, i'm English, married to a Frenchman and we live in France and it's difficult to find names that are nice in both countries ! Another solution could be Philippa or Fillipa but it's less French and the English usually shorten it to Pippa. Tiens moi au courant ! Nous, on a finalement choisi Elise pour ma fille qui sera née au mois d'août. façile à prononcer pour tout le monde ! Julie in Normandy

Thank you!
thank you very much for your very helpful answer. I think I'm more and more tempted by Philippine, slightly more 'international' and less 'ambiguous' than Sixtine. As for your suggestion, I also thought about Philippa which I really like. My only worry is the reaction on the French side, as your rightly point. Very good choice for Elise - a beautiful classic name which will please everyone! Is it your first child? I hope your experience with the French obstetrical system will be good. Hi again
I really like Philippine, it sounds so sweet ! The reason i mentioned Philippa is because my best friend at school was called Philippa and we all called her Pippa and it also came up on a French web site as an original name to give ! This is actually my 4th baby ! We already have 2 boys and a girl Thomas and Mathieu (11yrs & 9yrs) and Meg (very English, but the French cope!), she's 6 in May. I had them all in France and thought the French system was very good but I hated staying in the clinic for 5 days !! I just wanted to get home after 2 or 3 days. In England you'll be sent home the next day !!
