Hey Everyone. I am 19 years old. I love names and discussing names, My sister is preganant with her first child, who we just found out was a boy. I have suggested the name Cohen to her and she is unsure. She likes the name Finly and Spencer.. does anyone else like the name Cohen or am I alone on this? I tend to like names that are different and not as common. My sisters name is Megan she got a common name and I got "Marlise" Thanks so much Marlise

Hello, my youngest son is named Cohen and I love it! Some people spell it different they spell it as Koen, it is a boys name and means Preist, commonally used as a jewish surname. I have never heard of anyone else having it as a first name and like the fact that it is different, so your not alone!! hope this helps Donna

My son was born in February 2005. My husband and I had the worst time agreeing on a name for him and debated the issues for months before he was born.
My grandfather's first name was Cohen (born around 1910 or so), and we decided to name our son after him. It was original, yet still a family name.
Apparently it's growing in popularity. I had no idea!
I think it's a wonderful name. Your sister should go for it!
Our son's name is Cohen Robert.

if your sister is not in favor of Cohen, why are you trying to force your choice on her? it is her baby, save cohen for your self.

My husband and I were looking for something different in a name and wanted it to have a musical connection (my husband is a musician) so we decided on Cohen after Leonard Cohen. I LOVE his name, it suits him so...and it's definitely original! Our Cohen is now 2 1/2 and I can't imagine calling him anything else! Why not save the name for yourself to use in the future!

My wife and I have also have talked about the name Cohen as an idea for a future son. We love it for a last name (though it is not our last name) and think it would be an honourable first name.
I encourage people who are not Jewish, and are considering this as a first name, to also consider the following:
*Cohen is a royal last name in the Jewish religion and culture. A Cohen was a priest in the temple (which means people with this as a last name, would be priests today if the temple was standing), and when the temple is rebuilt, they will once again take their posts as priests in our temple.
When naming your son this name, though it doesn't mean he is a priest, gives him an honourable title! In our Jewish faith, this -as a first name- is unusual. When it happens, certain understandings are needed by the parents.
If you are not Jewish, please honour this holy, special, royal post in our temple. Please understand WHAT the name implies, and what it means to us who observe Judaism. If you understand this, seriously, then you could use the name. You may, though, contact a local synagogue and talk to a Rabbi.

for the info! I love the name Cohen - it's unusual but not weird. I'd put a classic middle name with it, like Matthew.
