"Barium meal "
Posted by babygirlhall 6 May  at  13:26

Hi,
My son is 9m+ and is booked in to have a barium meal on friday, he is having this done because he has a constant reflux problem. He has been on gaviscon for months now but it only helps slightly. He has also tried other medicines prescribed by the hospital but nothing has helped. Has any one had to take there child for a barium meal or know of anyone who has had one? I really hope they can help him because its driving me crazy.

Thanks

Marie & Joshua x

My little boy had something similar when he was a day old because he was sick a bright green mucus during the night, and had not swallowed any meconium during his birth. The Dr thought he could have had a twisted bowel, but thankfully everything turned out fine.

They told me not to feed him for at least a few hours before, otherwise it wouldn't work and they told me to expect him to be quite windy afterwards...Nice.

My partner went with him to have it done, they used a syringe to squirt a cloudy sticky liquid into his throat to swallow and my partner had to hold his arms down at the side of his head, so they could get a clear xray of his stomach and bowels. It was over in about 10-15 minutes and Kieran was fine.

Hope everything goes well for you and your little 'un. And you should know what is causing his problem, poor little chap.

Good luck for Friday.

Ellie and Kieran
x
