Bed time for 4 mth old??

What time would you expect a 4 mth old to go to bed at night?

I'm trying and trying to move her bedtime earlier and earlier but not much success.... even if I wake her up earlier in the morning to make her tired earlier at night, doesn't work!! Just want my evenings back for me and OH a bit, all we do at mo is spend time getting her sleep then I have time to have my shower and then its time for bed! I know whe's still young and thats probably just the way it is for now, but wondered what other babies bedtimes are?

At mo its around 9pm but I'd like it to be 7pm or 7.30pm ish

Bedtimes

Hi there,

Emily's bed time is anything from 7pm to 8.30pm, but it depends on her little naps throughout the day.

She has 6 feeds a day at 7a,m, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm. After her 7pm feed we try and put her to sleep and wake her for her 10pm feed then she normally sleeps through until 6.30am / 7am.

It is not always straight forward though, Emily would not go to sleep after her 7pm feed and she was up until 9ish so some nights it does not go to plan

Hey hun

hey hun

Abigail is 5 monthes and goes to bed anytime between 6.30pm -8pm...it is normally 7pm depending on if she has a sleep just b4. Her feeds are 7am, 12pm, 4pm, then depending on when she has her afternoon nap her last feed could be anytime between 6.30pm-7-30pm. I found abigail just did it herself though..i tried putting her to bed at 7pm when she was 3 monthes old then feeding her at 10pm so i knew she would sleep abit longer but that didnt work. I just noticed abigail was getting sleepy around 6pm so i would bath her bottle then bed. She takes a while to settle sometimes but then will sleep till around 3.30am(this has been happening for a month now) its a habit she has started doing ha ha ha just wants her dummy n then will go back to sleep till 6am. When i first did it she would sleep all the way through 7pm till 7am but has changed now ha ha. bless her.

I hope elise will pick up the routine quick for u hun...i bet she does

Hi all

thx for all the replies..... I think I'm going to have to be a bit strict to get the routine starting earlier in the day - more with myself than with Elise, I can't get myself out of bed on the mornings earlier than I do.... Normally its Elise who wakes ME up and dictates rest of days routine!.... I need to start the day earlier by getting out of bed myself and waking her up at certain time, then she'll be more tired earlier that night.
I know some people wake their babies up some don't, but I think if I wake her up in the morning just for a little while until we both establish a new getting up time, say 7.30am, after while we'll both do it naturally and I probably won't have to wake her up.

I don't wake her up when she naps in the day, but I have read that book Contented Baby by Gina Ford and it does make sense! But I have just used it as a guideline for how many naps she should have and roughly what time of day and its helped me recognise that Elise is tired around those times, other than that I can't follow a fairly strict routine as I'm not disciplined enough myself!

She was up earlier today (again, her choice not mine lol!) so hopefully she'll go to sleep earlier tonight

hi hun,

well, siri has only jut been settling into her own routine the past couple of weeks. she pretty much decided herself she wanted to sleep at more or less regular times.

up between 6 and 7, often she lies there for 10/20 mins gurgling and sucking her thumb and cloth, so cute!
sleep about 1.5 to 2 hours later for anything between 30 mins and 1.5 hours - she tends to wake up after 20mins but i just settle her again and she goes off to sleep
then she likes a nap around mid-day for anything between 45mins and 1.5 hours
and again a nap in the later afternoon, if we've been out and she's been interested in stuff she'll miss most of this nap but doze in the sling. so generally that leads to an earlier bed time
bedtime tends to be anything between 6 and 8pm- if she has missed her earlier nap then 6 and if she had a nap, then between 7 and 8.

she gets very upset if she is over tired, but we are both getting better at recognising when she needs to sleep and she settles very quickly.

she sleeps about 5 hours, then is up for a feed, but back to sleep within 20mins, then is up every 3(ish) hours for a quick feed.

until the past few weeks though, it was all a bit random.

hugs

I guess we're all different hun

I wasn't saying that i have a strict routine and would wake him regardless of if he needed it or not!
To be honest it was kind of a routine that Riley settled into of his own accord, as in the early days we were very much lead by him. There are benefits to limiting their sleep during daytime hours, but obviously there are times when they need it.
Riley always seemed to wake around 7 am every day naturally, sometimes earlier and sometimes later, it was never a regimented rule. He sleeps through till around 8-9am every day now so I just let him have whatever he needs.

I guess we all have to do whatever we think is best for our babies, afer all we know them better than anyone.
sounds liek Nyla is a good girl for her mummy tho!

Hey there

From around 8-9weeks I used to have riley's routine like this,

7am wake and feed,
9am Short nap (he onle ever managed around 20 mins at this one)
11-11.30, feed
between 12 and 1 pm nap for around 2 hours
2pm, feed
4pm little top up feed of around 2-3 oz
between 6-6.30 we'd bath him
7-7.30 down to bed awake!
I used to give him about 6 oz at midnight and he always went straight down again afterwards. I stopped this feed when I started weaning.

It was always a little flexable but we kinda tried to stick to it as these were the times that Riley naturally became tired hungry etc from the start!
I am super lucky as Riley has always slept through the night. When he first came home from hospital and he was slow puttin on weight, we had to do a few night feeds, and he used to sleep through them! lol.
they're all different hunny, but maybe try bringing her bedtime forward by 15 mins every night to get her used to it gradually! ??

Good luck, I hope you manage to get ur evenings to yourself as I know what a Godsend this time can be at the end of a manic day.

George goes to be between 9pm-9.30pm. he normally has a nap between 5.30-7.30pm and a feed at 7.30pm..

sometimes he has been asleep by 8pm but very rarely..

I know how you feel!

jacob is the same! he goes to bed at 9- 9.30 and i too have tried everything

he trys too trick us too by having a little nap at 7.30 after his bath and a bottle and for the life of us we can't wake him up! so we put him to bed and bang on the dot he wakes up at 9 for his last bottle!! he's been doing this for about 3 weeks now!!

his waking up time has got later, he now wakes up at 7 ish, so i can't really grumble.

love+hugs

I guess we were lucky

When my daughter was 4 months, we put her to bed at 7.00pm, following her last main feed of the night. We tended to give her formula milk as her last main feed, rather than the breast, as we had heard it may help make her sleep for longer. We stuck to this as stringently as we could as, like you, we wanted our evenings back. We followed the "Contented Little Baby Book" (Gina Ford) when it came to feeding and bedtimes and looking back, it really helped. Don't get me wrong, it was a nightmare for weeks as even though we started the bedtime routine at 6pm - bathing her, playing and feeding - it sometimes took a couple of hours to get the hang of it. The trick was to stick to it and it got easier and easier. I would occasionally have to feed at 11pm but that was only in the early days.

My routine was:

get her up at 7.00am
put her down to nap at 9.30am
get her up at 10.30am
put her down to nap at 2.00pm
get her up at 4.00pm
put her down at 7.00pm

with regular feeds in between.

Our parents thought we were a bit too strict about the routine, but it has served us well. Our daughter is now 18 months and goes to bed awake just after 7, gets herself to sleep and wakes up around 7.00am the following day bright eyed and bushy tailed.

I think you need to decide what time you're putting her bed and even though it may seem like you're not getting anywhere, stick to it and your daughter will get used to the routine and you will get your evenings back!

Good luck!
