hungry baby

Hey girls, I could do with some advice please.
I am in the process of changing Archie over from Breast to Formula because he is so demanding and feeds constantly, so I am restricted to the house.
I have been giving him 4oz of formula every other feed (breast alternate) but he still seems to be hungry!! He'll go about 20-30mins and then Im topping him up with breast milk! I just dont know what to do with him?! Im going to try and up him too 5oz for the rest of the day/night and see how we go from there, hes already on Cow & Gate HUNGRY baby so I dont really know what to do next???!

Any advice would gratefully be recieved x

forgot to say also try giving him cooled boiled water aswell as sometimes he might just be thirsty? rather than hungry. or maybe you've tried that??? lol

Hiya

hey hun

hope alls going well!
well yasmin is 7weeks and drinking 6oz of aptimal hungry baby every 4-5 hours.
ive only started giving her the hungry baby one yesterday as i noticed she was moaning in between feeds for more, and funnily it must have settled her last night as she slept till 6am without waking up! no complaints there lol.
To be honest i have noticed that breast fed babies seem to cry alot more than bottle fed babies and they seem to be much hungrier. i think (or in my opinio should i say) it may be because when you bottle feed you can make sure your baby is getting enough milk where as when you breast feed your not sure how much they are getting! i noticed this when i was in hospital as while i was there i shared a room with two difrent ladies who were both breast feeding and both babies cried an awful lot and wouldnt settle, while mine didnt even make a sound! i noticed this when i had my 1st aswell!!
As much as they say breast is best, i dont think i could manage a screaming baby. partly for the fact ive never had one, so im used to having quiet babies.
Id say give him time to get used to the formula and try and get him into a routine. i started a routine immediatly when i got back from hosp and it has worked so far no problems. yasmin knows when she is due milk and usually wakes up spot on time or about 20 mins b4 hand.
Also as soon as you notice that your baby is emtying every bottle you know its time to up it an ounce and so forth.
Also do you use a dummy? I use a dummy with yasmin as i see she gets comfort out of sucking so if she does winge between feeds i give her her dummy and that usually settles her.
Also dont restict yourself to the house try and go for walks with baby in the buggy, it might soothe him to sleep, and its fresh air for you, and excersice and it gets you out! I find it works for yasmin anyway she loves being in the buggy, car seat and her bouncer. oh the bouncer it works wonders as soon as i switch on the vibration she drifts off to sleep its like an on off switch cz when you switch it off she wakes up lol.
I know all babies are different but theres just a few things i thought of that i do myself...
If all fails and your really struggling then have a word with you health visitor see what they suggest.
If you wanna talk or anyting feel free to pm me!
sorry for the mega long reply LOL

Hi

Archie sounds as hungry as Megan.

We were giving her 4oz of SMA gold, and she was pretty much clearing that, then an hour later she was wanting more.
We moved upto 5oz, and she was clearing that and going for upto 2 and a half hours.

I started expressing which ended up being a bad idea as there wasnt much and with my infection was making things worse for myself. When i spoke to the midwife she told me to try and give Megan my expressed milk at the night time feed just before bed as its meant to fill them up a bit more. cant say i noticed a massive difference, but she wasnt taking so much when she wakes up in early hours, maybe try doing that???

Megan is now on 5oz of SMA hungry baby, and has bout 9 bottles a day

Hope you find something that works for you soon

Nat and 2 week Megan xxx

Thanx guys xx

Wouldnt this be so much easier if they were all programed the same!!! lol

One more question: Do you all still feed on demand with the formula??

Thanx again
Adele+Archie x

Hey,

Just to answer the above question, you can feed on demand with formula if you wanted but has you are restricted to the house obviously a routine will be better for you. First see how much milk Archie can drink in 1 bottle (he should usually leave an oz or so in the bottom) Once you've worked this out then for a couple of days just keep track of how often he's having his bottles (usually 3-4hrs) Then once you know that you can start "tweaking" him into a routine which works for you.

J's routine (finally) is up at 8am 6oz bottle then a 6oz bottle every 3 hours until 8pm and in bed by 8.30pm. He has he naps at 9.30-10.30 & 12-2.

Might take a while to get a feeding routine that suits you both but when you do..... You'll be able to leave the house because you can time everything around his feeds......

Hope it goes well.....

S & J Xx
