Cr##ing myself now!

I have just found out (20 mins ago) that my brothers girlfriend has confirmed swine flu... I called my Dad to let him knnow and they were both there on sunday and i was at my Dads yesterday..

Now im really worried about George catching it.. also the local school where the baby clinic is has had an outbreak and i was there yesterday as well..

Does anyone know how i stand with getting tamiflu for George or what will happen if a baby does get it..??? I have looked at the NHS website but it doesnt really give much info about babies...

Thanks in advance for any replies...

Thanks nikki and rach,

I feel a bit more reassured now, that's the clearest info I've seen so far should've known it'd come from someone on here rather than the powers that be who should be keeping us informed! Hope it puts Nikki's and everyone else's mind a bit more at rest too, cheers girls you're both fab.

Love and hugs,

Hi hun!

Swine flu has arrisen since I have been out of practice after having Riley so my knowledge of it is prob as hazy as everyonme elses.
However, the general cases tend to be fairly mild, often less symptomatic than regular flu. The main worry is for those who hav ongoing severe medical difficulties, esp those effecting the immune system!
The drug Tamiflu can be given to children but as far as I am aware its use is only licenced for children aged one and over! but to be honest there are actually very few drugs that are licenced for babies and children! this doesn't stop it from being prescribed it it just very difficult to test drugs on children (hence lack of licence). Many of the very common drugs are unlicenced for babies and are still safely prescribed on a daily basis!
With the under 1's I'd imagine that the drug can be prescribed with adequate supervision from a doctor.
Check out this site and there is a section for you to search for your local authority, who would be able to tell you of any precautions and protocols that are in place for babies!

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Swineflu/DG_177831?CID=SFlu&TYPE=sponso redsearch&CRE=2

also here are the most common symptoms in babies, who dont tend to get the full range of symptoms that adults can do!

fever, irritability, poor appetite, cough or diarrhea.

I hope this is of some use hunny!
Lets keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't turn out to be swine flu mate!
Take care

Hi hunni

My mum is a nurse working at once of the centers who deal with all the calls, tests, results etc. - so she is very well versed in swine flu! I have been crapping myself with worry that Holly will get it somehow. Anyway she has told me not to worry myself silly, and that the worst thing about swine flu is the high temperature so just to be very aware of that, keep a very close eye and just if anyone gets it they need to keep hydrated, and keep temp down i.e. paraceteamol (or baby equivalent), not many clothes etc. It is only serious if the patient has serious underlying health problems which can be made 1000x worse by a high temperature that a very ill person cannot fight / deal with. And the incubation period is only 7-10 days. It is better to just accept that we will probably all have it sooner or later as it is moving past the containment phase now and they have drugs to treat it, vaccine ready for autumn etc. It has also been said that in most cases it is milder than normal flu! It's just a slightly different strain of the flu virus. I hope this makes you feel a bit better!

Love and hugs.

I asked

about this the other day as I couldn't find any info either and there are several confirmed cases at the school my mum teaches at. It is a bit worrying that no-one seems to have any specific info about babies but I'm just trying to see it the same as any other flu virus really, you do what you can to keep them away from people who have it and try not worry too much otherwise, you can't possibly keep them away from everyone who may have been in contact short of putting them in an oxygen tent! All you can do is keep a close eye on them and seek medical advice if you're remotely concerned about possible symptoms. It is a worry though, was gonna take Kaitlyn to the docs in the morning cos she's constipated again and it's happening a bit too often but as it happens she's been now (3 days worth, filled her trouser leg, nice!) and I'm not sure it's worth the risk of taking her to a germ filled surgery just at the minute. Think the best we can do is be sensible and vigilant but try not to panic any more than we can help, not easy when it comes to our babies though.

Love and hugs,

it is scary stuff but im not sure what they can give? im going to look into this tamiflu stuff because they think its going to get worse around august but im hearing alot more people getting it... we were ment to see a family friend but she wrote us a letter saying dont come round cos her sister has had it and shes been visiting her so she didnt want to risk passing it on to Rosie.

Lucy and Rosie (5 weeks tomorrow) xxx

oh i hope it isnt! i was watching dr.chris on this morning when swine flu broke out and he said that babies can take tamiflu but only under doctors supervision.
hopefully it will be just a cold.

love+hugs

Ok its not confirmed...

my dad has spoken to my brother and it turns out that it has not been confirmed as swine flu but she has a cold and as they dont swab any more they have given her tamiflu as a precaution as she works in a nursing home...

Same boat!!

My mum told me today that a teacher at my nephews school has confirmed Swine Flu!! We spent all weekend with him!! Suppose to be spending next weekend with him too!! The last thing Archie needs on top of everything hes had just lately is that!!

I dont know how they treat babies tho, they MUST have some protocol.

Lets all keep everyone updated if they find out
