Follow on milk

Sam is almost 6 months and has been on Aptamil for the last 3 months (was BF before that). I was in the supermarket today and realised that he should be moving onto follow on. Is it totally necessary, is there much difference?
Also my friend gave me loads of HIPP follow on that she hasn't needed for her daughter and I'm wondering whether to switch to that but worrying about upsetting things when Aptamil clearly suits him. What do you think?

If Sam's happy on Aptamil, I'd leave him be. Olivia is still on Stage 1 and she's 10 months now. My HV told me that the follow in milk's not necessary - its basically just so that the manufacturers can get their name out there as they're not allowed to advertise formula for babies under 6 months (it goes against promoting breast feeding)!

you should leave him on the Aptamil as he is. It's not necessary to change to follow up milk. I never did
