Solids

Hi

I went to get Megan weighed today, its been 2 weeks, so was expecting it to be about 14lb but she is only 13lb 7oz, might still seem like a good weight but its dropped on the chart.

Told the HV that megan has started waking up again in the night, last night it was 3 times draining 4oz bottles each time, and that she has been watching and copying us when we eat, we went for a meal the other night and she was on my lap and she launched herself at my potato, so the hv has told me to start putting her on babyrice.

It doesnt bother me she is waking up in the night although it was nice to be able to wake up next to lee, i quite like the cuddles and we get to curl up on the sofa for a little bit, but she obviously isnt getting what she needs from just milk anymore, as she was on hungry baby constantly just seems a little early to me, Megan is only 10 weeks and 3 days but she did say they go by the lines and the weight not that age, but im still a bit wary, gave her a little tonight and she has taken it off a spoon really well and got really excited, but havent had any advice on how to do this, all she said was in the evening about 5pm, but do i give her a little baby rice and some milk or just baby rice then milk at the night feed?

Confusing.

Hi hun

we started weaning Siri at 6 months - though in a way she was 5 - but she had all the signs we are meant to look out for

they need to be able to grasp food and bring it to their mouths
they need to be interested in it
the tongue reflex that automatically pushes everything out of their mouths has to be gone
they need to be able to sit up without support - or with very ilttle
and very important - full head control
and also the ability to say no to more food - otherwise they can't self-regulate with solids

we also noticed that siri was dribbling a great deal when watching us eat

ok i started writing this hours ago but been playing with my wriggly worm of a daughter lol so it might be a bit disjointed lol

have to run, aforementioned wriggler is getting sleepy lol
hugs

Baby rice

Hi there,

I also agree that it is too early but then the HV should know what they are talking about.

We give Emily a feed at 5pm of Baby Rice (mixed with fruit) - you just do the baby rice, then a milk drink at 6.30pm before bed. Emily is six and a half months old though so there is a huge age difference.

What is Megan drinking in the day? Assume that she is getting lots of drink during the day and not getting confused with day and night?

Hmm i'm really srprised the HV advised to give baby rice so early, My friend is a HV and She has been taught that you dont wean until 6 months. I think the reason that Megan is waking is becase she is having a growth spurt, to be honest i would just go with the growth spurt and feed her as and when, Scarlett woke in the night for a bottle or two until she was 9 months old, weaning her onto solids at 6 months made no difference whatsoever.

Also, re her weight gain, Megan may have grown in height rather than weight, and as they get older they start to put on less weight, the 14lb weightgain every fortnight is really just a guide, Scarlett never put on on 14lb in 2 weeks.

The thing with giving Megan babyrice is that you will have to continue weaning her and introducing more foods, and i personlly think 10 weeks really is to early, also Megan showing an interest in food really is a natural progression, she is discovering new things in her surroundings etc, i wouldnt say that it is a sign she is ready for food.

If you was to continue giving her babyrice then you would give it to her as well as her bottles.

Take care

Donna, Scarlett 17 months and 29week boy bump.

Hey hun

We were told at our parent class not to start giving solids before 4 months and to try and get as closs too 6 months as we could. They said rushing to do so can mess up their digestive system! I know its different for each baby and your HV wouldnt have said to do so if it was wrong, this is just what Ive been told

Also, I dont know about your area but here where I am we get a lesson on how and when to wean by out HV at the local surgery, maybe ask and see if they do one near you. xx

It is Soooooooooooo confussing !!

I feel quite wary about it, but have tried her on a little baby rice and she loved it, made a mess and kept trying to get the spoon but she seemed to like it.
If she doesnt start taking any less bottles or settling better then im going to stop again.

Have left a message on HV answerphone to get her to come out and give me some advice and some tips.

Confussing eh!... im sure you give the rice aswell as the milk im not 100% but u can give milk before or after the rice... wait for other replies just encase! would be instresting to see what people say.

I cant wait untill rosie can go onto baby rice as she also loves watching us eat and she licks her lips and waits as if were going to give her some lol.

Hope u and megan are well

Lucy & Rosie (13wks tomorrow)
