How much water after weaning?

Hi all, Sam is now almost 7 months. I weaned him gradually from 5 months. He's now on 3 meals a day and has a very varied diet. We've dropped his milk intake from 35 oz to 24 altho he prob takes in about 21. He used to have 5 bottles of 7 oz and now he has 2 of 7 (first and last thing) and 2 of 5 (mid morn and aft). I try and encourage him to have water with meals but he's not keen, i've tried baby fruit juice, different cups and so on but he still doesn't take much. He wees plenty so not too worried but just wondered how much your little ones take and should I be trying to encourage him more?

Hey

Hey Rach,

We have same problem, Emily does not take fruit juice or water. They say do it from beakers but we are using a bottle at the moment and I am lucky if I get 5 seconds of drinking at meal times. I guess if they were really thirsty then they would drink. At least Sam is drinking milk well. We are lucky if Emily drinks 18 ounces of milk a day but then she has always been a small drinker.

I would keep trying and persevering (sp) with the juice and water!

What are you feeding him by the way?

You're right...

they would drink if thirsty. i think the only reason why Sam likes his beaker is it's cold from the fridge and he can gnaw his poor gums on it!

Sam's typical day is bottle milk, bowl porridge (diff flavours) and a bowl of mashed or pureed fruit (apple, pear, peach, banana, mango, papaya, blueberries, strawberries etc!). Then at lunch he has a puree of veg (sweet pot, carrot, butternut sq, lentils, celery, onion, parsnip, potato, brocolli, cauliflower, courgette etc) followed by yoghurt which is the all time fave! Then at tea he has a puree veg again and either fruit or yoghurt or both! He also has finger foods like toast, slices of apple, mango etc, and rice cakes and I got some organix snacks yesterday that went down well. He has rusks as a treat but the reduced sugar ones, couldn't believe how much was in the others. I'm gonna start introducing lumpier foods and meat into his diet soon but just a bit reluctant yet whilst he has a dodgy tummy whilst teething.

I get recipes from the annabel karmel book but we also have a stock of jars in case i can't be bothered or we're out...just easier sometimes. My friend really confused me by saying she was gonna do baby led weaning which i hadn't even heard of!

What are feeding Emily? x

Feeding...

We are doing pretty much the same, Emily has her milk when she gets up at 7am followed by a bowl of porridge (again diff flavours), then at lunch normally some pureed veg with a little bit of baby rice in it followed by a yoghurt and some nibbly things like snacks. Mid afternoon she has a milk drink and at tea she has pureed fruit with rice (which she loves!!). Bedtime milk is approx 6.30pm then she is in bed for 7 ish.

I have the same book and made the cauliflour cheese (not popular at the mo), the chicken, apple and carrot and also the sweet potato, courgette and watercress. Havent tried other things yet. Have a freezer full of pureed fruit and veg that I have prepared myself but when we are out and about we use Ellas' kitchen or some of Cow and Gate things (got free with the Bounty Pack). Emily is not keen on the potted meals yet, I think the flavours are too strong for her but she is eating the c&g desserts.

I don't know what baby led weaning is either but I am happy with what Emily is eating, we just need to slowly introduce meats and other flavours but there is plenty of time for that.

Re nibbles I have been buying the organic snack range from Sainsburys which she likes, Emily just needs to get the hang of holding something in her hand and actually eating it properly.

We have more lumps and bumps now in our food - I mashed up pear and banana for her by only using a fork and she was fine with that.

Great Fun!
