Coughs and colds

Hi there,

Should I go to the doctors in the morning?? Emily had a cold and whilst the snotty part has dissappeared she has been left with a dry cough. SHe is generally fine in the day with a couple of coughing fits but at night it seems worse and she coughs alot more. It does not seem to be bothering her and she is going back to sleep on her own but I am wondering whether I should get her to see the Doctor to make sure there is no gunk still left in her chest or something.....

Do you think I am being a bit over-protective and let things get better by themselves or see the Quack. She is fine in herself, no temperature, eating and drinking normally.......

Thanks Girls

Well something worked......

Emily had a better night which meant we did too - she went to bed at 6.45pm and did cough a few times but by the time we went to bed (9pm - yes we were tired!!) she was sound asleep. I also had a sneaky glass of wine too which helped

Her mattress was propped up and I popped karvol onto a muslin at the end of her cot - I also think she was teething quite a bit yesterday, sucking her mouth in alot so I did bonjela also.

We did not wake up until 7.25am this morning so she must have been quiet - normally Emily wakes us up at approx 6.20am so Mark was late getting to work this morning - whoops!

Anyway, hope you are all well - must do some housework!

Hey hun

How old is Emily? Is she on any food yet coz you could always give her some warm honey and lemon, this is good for coughs

Honey and lemon

Hi Adele,

Emily is only just over 7 months so the honey is a no no. We will do the karvol and the mattress is now propped up so hopefully we are in for a better night. Trouble is I cannot settle and fall asleep as I am worrying about her coughing......

Oh well, hopefully she will be better in a couple of days.

Hi natalie

Hope Emily's feeling a little better and you're not too exhausted!

I had the same dilemma with Olivia, she's been coughing on and off for at least a couple of weeks now and full of cold. I took her to the docs this morning to get her checked over and they said as long as she's not got a high temperature and is eating, drinking and looking well within herself then not to worry and it'll pass on its own.

She also suggested trying steam in her bedroom or propping up the head of her bed - dont think that will do much good in Olivia's case though as she roams around the bed and spends most of the night on her tummy!

Hopefully the doctor will put your mind at ease

Hi shell

The Doctor will probably think I am being a bit mad but I want to rule out an ear infection or if the carratahh (sP) is not lodged in her chest. I will pop her in a sleepbag tonight as she is really restless and starts roaming around the cot and then she is not covered up and also I will put the towels back under her mattress. I did this at the start of the cold when we had lots of snot but took them out a few days ago.

Emily is fine during the day when she is playing it is just when she is napping or sleeping (i.e. lying down!!).

Is there cough medicine I can use - will take a look at the Boots website....

Thanks
Natalie

Medicine

I went into Boots last week and asked for a cough medicine. They told me that the government guidelines have changed and that most medicines are now only allowed to be sold if the child is over 6 years!! She sold me a Benylin medicine for tickly coughs which is for 3 months and over but I'm not sure its actually made any difference to be honest.

Emily's cough sounds just like Olivia's so try not to worry too much. Dont worry about the doctor thinking your being silly either, its always best to put your mind at ease.

Shelley xx

Morning

Hiya,

Well I have made an appointment for Emily to see the Dr's later today. She was coughing alot more in the night and was very unsettled and so was I. Also she felt cold too....... Her cough is very dry but perhaps come cough medicine may help.

Anyway, will see what the Dr says later, meanwhile I am hoping for an easy day as only got about 3-4 hours sleep last night - Zzzzzzzzzzzz

I would be the same, im always questioning weather to take Rosie to the doctors or not... I did take her today for a reflux issue but whilst i was there i mentioned about her cold and the doctor said aslong as she has no high temp then she is fine... but if you think it is sitting on Emilys chest then i would just take her, theres no harm in just checking but i do no what you mean as i feel sometimes im being over-protective but i think its best JUST ENCASE... Maybe see how she is over night and decide in the morning.

Hope this helps in some way

Hey hun

Archie is just getting over a nasty really snotty cold, he doesnt have such a bad cough but will from time to time. I havnt taken him to the docs mainly because his temp has stayed down and the one day he was really bad I gave him Calpol and he slept through the worst.
Its completely up to you hun, you know your baby and it might give you peice of mind xx

Hope shes better soon

Well...

you know I said it is not bothering her, as soon as I posted this message she cried and was not settling back so I have gone up, changed her nappy, given her a cuddle, offered her water ( did not want ) then settled her back down - fingers crossed.....

I think I will see the Dr - just to be on the safe side

Thanks Girls - I guess I am going to bed now just in case we have a broken night!

Sleep Well
