Christening

Hi there,

We are having Emily christened next month in the local village church. I was a bit nervous as we are not religous nor are we married but the Reverend came round to see us and she was lovely and there were no scary questions like do you believe in god or why do you want Emily Christened. She welcomes us to the village church and we are having a short half hour small family service. No cost for a Christening but we will donate probably £20 - 30 to the Church Pot.

I am glad that we are doing it as it is like a 'welcome' for Emily and I have bought a beautiful dress from Monsoon....................!!

Looked at naming ceremonies but to be honest I think that Emily's grandparents would have preferred a church service.

Perhaps we should have asked the Reverend to get a BOGOF, and do the wedding too!!

If anyone is still reading this thread...

We are having similar debates in our house. Me and hubby don't really want to get Isla christened as don't really believe enough (didn't get married in a church etc), but are being pressured from relatives who do, but I don't really want to cave in just for that.

However, I wasn't christened, and the other day when my nephew was christened I wasn't allowed to be godmother as a result, and even if we'd wanted to get married in a church I couldn't, without getting baptised etc first, and doing it all as an adult seems to involve a lot more, regular attendance, classes etc.

I don't really want Isla to have to go through all that if later on she wants to get married in a church or whatever, my question is, with these naming ceremonies, would this 'allow' her to do all the same stuff as being christened, or not? does anyone know? I'm guessing not...........?

Thanks
Love N & Isla (11months) xx

No

a naming day will not 'allow' Isla to be a god parent or get married in a church!!!
This is one thinge we debated a LOT!!!

Thanks Janice!! xxxx

We had one in a near by hotel!!!

Lydia had a massave naming day near our home, and it was lovely, I'd highly recomend it!!!
We paid a bomb (£300+) for a local reg. to lead it ... which on hind sight I wouldn't do again!! If you have the reg lead the ceremony, then you have to have it done at a licenced venue (£200+ fee). You can choose readings etc, which they agree to.
I made my own plan for them to follow, but they also have a outline to give ideas!!!
We told everyone that it was formal dress, had flowers on the tables, Lydia wore a christening gown, proff photographer etc. It was a great day!!!

I found this website (and their book) very helpful:

http://www.civilceremonies.co.uk

I'll try and send you a copy of what we did to see if it helps!!!

If there are any questions you have, just pm me!!!

Love Janice & Lydia,
xxx.

Forgot to say that the people from the web site can lead the ceremony foe a LOT cheaper than a reg, which is what we'd do if we had a second child!!!

Just added some pics of the day so you can see what we did ... I hope this helps,

Hello

I dont really know much about them but all I do know is it is free to have a Christening and about £200 to have a naming ceremony.

Im getting Archie Christened, Im not overly religious but both me and Matt are Christened and we wanted to follow tradition.
We cant do ours untill next year tho coz one of his Godfathers is in the Army.

Anyway, good luck finding out

Hiya

Hey

We are looking into this also, as the church we wanted is booked till june and megan will be 1 by then, we want to do it when she is little and and we dont go to church apart from christmas for my nans sake
If you got to your local registry office they have a leaflet on how to go about it and they will be able to give you a number to call to find out places in your area that hold them or actually be able to give you a list then and there.

Cant be of much help other than that at the moment, with me and megan being ill havent had time to follow anything up. Im sure there will be loads of stuff on google

Ooh thx for that

it's a great help. Hope you feel better soon
