André has his first cold........

Hi Ladies and babies,

André has his first cold and im petrified - i know that his immune system should be alot stronger than Mya's but im still scared...

He keeps gagging coz the the phlem (sp?) any suggestions - he is in a bouncer which lays flat and i propt it up so that he is at an angle but i just hate the gagging reminds me of Mya when she was so ill.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worse of it all is that he seems to be following a very similar pattern to Mya and how she got really snotty and a cold around the same time doesnt help me!

Lots of Love Sammie, Mya + André (15 days )

Hi hun,

firstly havent said before as I hav hardlly been on Congrats on Andre, what a lovely name!

the only things you can really do at his age is keep the atmosphere in the room moist to help shift the phlem! Ie keep damp towels on the radiator, keep a bowl of hot water in the room up high to help moisten the air.
Raise the head end of his crib/moses basket and when you feed him try to keep him in a slightly upright position if poss. this helps to stop him gagging if the congestion is interfering with his feeding.
he shouldnt really have Calpol before 8 weeks without the advice of your doctor, even a half dose may not be suitable for him but if he feels warm keep his clothes minimal and loose!

I think you'd benifit from lettin ur HV or GP hav a wee look at him, not because I think anything is wrong, but I think it would help you feel confident that everythings ok hun.
Its terrible when such wee ones get ill, but I can only imagine how it feels for you hun!

i think someone has suggested the steamy bathroom, thats great. I did it with Riley when he was a few weeks old with his first cough. I used to turn the shower on for a few mins till the room filled with steam and sit in there with him for about 10 mins! helps to loosen anything that may be congesting his nose and throat!

hope thats useful hun
BIG hugs x

Hey hun

Poor little Andre, these colds are going around. Archie is on his second in a month, we had to go too A&E Thurs night coz he got so bad!!!!

This is what I have done:

* I have put a bit of wood under the feet of his crib to raise the head end up (dont put anything under the matress, keep that flat.

* I use 'Snuggle Babe' on his chest at night (its like Vicks)

* I put a Karvol capsule on a Muslin by the head end of the crib at night.

* I also have a Karvol plug in for nights.

* I have been giving him Calpol when his temp goes up a bit.

* I have just bought a suction thingy for the snotty nose.

You can also take him into a steamy bathroom with you.

I make sure Archie gets some fresh air once a day.
If he doesnt take his bottle, I make sure he has some water so he doesnt dehydrate.

But most importantly we have LOTS OF CUDDLES

If your really worried just take him to the docs/hosp like we did, thats what thry are there for hun.

I hope he gets better soon xx

Hello hunny

Firstly huge congrats on your gorgeous wee man
Secondly, I know you're scared hun, especially with what happened with Mya still being so raw, it's understandable. (((HUGS))) Andre will be just fine, babies get colds all the time and they fight it off. Like you said, His immune system is alot stronger. When I had my daughter, she was born 16 weeks premature and was in hospital for weeks on life support and oxygen. She got a cold when she was 4 weeks old and she managed to fight it off even when she was born at 24 weeks gestation, so your lil man will fight it no problem. Babys are very strong, they don't seem it but they are. Their little bodies are designed to fight off infections and colds etc as they have so much to deal with in their first few weeks.
I know it's easy for me to say cos I haven't been through such a horrible ordeal as you, but please don't worry. Mya is watching her little brother and protecting him. He will be just fine chick.

I don't have any advice on the phlem though but I am sure one of the other lovely ladies will be able to advise you on that. I just didn't want to read and run. I hope I've helped a little and not just waffled on like I normally do!! Keep your chin up and stay positive! I hope your looking after yourself and eating well.

Take care and you know where we are if you need a rant or to let anything out.
Love and hugs

Kirsty, Daisy (3) and Jack (5 Days )

Hi Sammie,

Wuth Andre's moses basket or cot (whichever one he is in) try elevating the mattress at night with a folded blanket or a folder if you have one, this will help the phlegm slide down his throat, this is what i used to do with Emily. I also gave her some cooled boiled water in a bottle (bout an oz) just to lubricate her thraot to make it easier for her to cough. Its hard when they are tiny (its still hard when she is now 19 months old!)

Hope Andre gets better soon and i know its easier said than done, but please try not to worry too much, and if you feel that there is something seriously wrong, contact your gp. they would rather you went down just to get him checked out, then stay home worrying (trust me, i was down my gp's at every sniffle with Emmy!)

Good luck Sammie, and stay strong hun

Karen,Emily(19months tomorrow)&William bump(23weeks tomorrow)
