my poorly lil girl

Hi Ladies,

I am in some state of distress, Emily has been ill today, not able to keep anything down at all, not even severly watered down juice. I rand devon doctors and got her an appt at the out of hours gp and he said she has gasteroenteritious (sp?) i feel so helpless cos i cant do anything for her, im scared that she is gonna get dehydrated.

I feel so guilty, she woke at 6 this morning, i heard her cough (nothing unusual there as she has had a persistant cough for the last week or so) then she cried a little before going back to sleep. I was going to check on her but as she went to sleep again i thought there was no need.

Anyhoo, she woke again at 9, so i went into get her, and noticed she had been sick. Thought it was due to the earler coughing so didn't overly worry about it, gave her a bath, got her dressed and took her downstairs for breakfast.

She had 2 slices of toast with a thin smear of butter (her fave), and half a cup of juice, when she had finished that, she was in her highchair watching fireman sam, and brought her breakfast up! no gagging no warnng, just bam, up it came, now coupled with the earlier vomiting i got concerned and called devon dr's and when they called back, she said give her some fluids, and is she keeps that down try her on some food later on, so i gave her a quarter cup of juice and waited, Emily bimbled into the kitchen with her daddy and it was like someone had just opened a tap in her mouth, all over the floor So i called devon dr's back, took her into see them and thats when he told me that, he said in rare cases they have to admit some children to rehydrate them, i don't want this to happen to Emmy, she is so little and would not understand, and we hate hospitals.

Can anyone give me some advice on what i can do for her to make her keep at least SOME fluid down? She has had the same nappy on since 9am this morning and its still essentially dry!

Help, please?

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for the replies,

Thankfully my lil monkey is on the mend now, the dr said it is more likely to be a virul thing (they always say that lol) but apart from a tantrum in sainsbury's yesterday, she managed to keep down her flat lucazade and farlay's. And today im keeping her on really watered down juice and bland foods (although im gonna give her boiled egg for lunch if she will take it)

Its lovely to know that people are thinking of her and care enough to reply

Thanks again

(((hugs)))

Alfie had a Gastro bug last year and he wouldn't keep anything down either, he started to get dehydrated and limp i rushed him up the NHS walk in centre and they handed me a 10ml syringe and told me to get him to drink 5mls every 5 mins...so i sat in a little room at the walk in centre syringe feeding him really watered down ribena...and he managed to keep it all down.

So it might be worth trying her with a few mls of juice every 5 mins, if she doesn't throw up straight away then at least some of the fluids have gotten into her.

And remember if it does end with a hospital stay then she is in the best place, and you must stay calm as she will pick up on your fears and stress.
huge hugs to you all

Hi

I dont know how old emily is but when my son was younger and suffering with exactly the same problems i was told to give him flat lemonade to drink by our GP. According to the GP when its flat it isnt too hard on the stomach and can even help settle an upset tummy and with it being sweet a poorly child is more likely to take it than plain water.

I hope emily is feeling better soon.

Poor emily

I have no experience of this at all hun so i won't be much use i'm afraid ..
Just googled a few things and nhs site says that mainly dehydration is caused more by diarrhea so maybe don't panic just yet .. ( easier said than done i know sorry )
Hopefully soon she will at least be able to keep some water or juice down .. be keeping my fingers crossed bless her.

Dylan had a bad tummy bug 2 weeks ago and was projectile vomiting for a day and the next day back to normal

Hope she's much better really soon
