hi,
I thought I'd make this into a thread, after replying to sixtyandlovingit.

I was adopted as a baby and I can't remember a time when i didn't know about it. I think my Mother told me when I was about three or four. I grew up in a very stable, close family, with two adopted brothers. We all grew up feeling special because our parents had picked us out and taken us home!

I think that is the best way to present it to children, I can imagine it being very traumatic being told that you are adopted as an adult, it would be like your whole life was a lie - I know that sounds abit dramatic, but I think it would.

So there you go.

So was I , back in 1956, and told I was "specially chosen" Then I had my own baby (while unmarried)in 1975....when I told my adopted mother I was pregnant she just went mad and told me I was a slut "Just like your mother".....luckily my adored baby went to a good home and luckily too I have heard from her, she grew up in a very stable and loving family and has her mothers (my) green eyes! She also was told when very small that she was "chosen specially".....I never found my birth mother, despite looking.....xxxx

"Do you think it has made you feel any differently about your parents?"

I would imagine that it has made no odds at all to your relationship with your parents. Do you think it has had any affect?

How could the parents deal best with telling an odler child they were adopted? I don't mean eighth or nine as obviously they would know themselves and have clear memories, but more toddler-age where memories of early childhood could be confused?
