We love: bakelite jewellery

Vintage bakelite is inspiring many a jewellery designer, including Alex + Chloe and YSL this season, and here at soFem HQ we're loving bakelite bangles and even brooches. 

Bakelite is a type of plastic that, once cast, can't be melted. It was all the rage in the 1930s during the Great Depression because it was a cheap-as-chips way of accessorising women's wardrobes. But one-off designer bakelite and pieces encrusted with rhinestones and metal also made bakelite desirable for the better off, and it's now sought after by collectors.
